ABOUT US

About Checotah Tree Service

Locally Owned. Eastern Oklahoma–Tested. Family-Operated.

Checotah Tree Service is a family-owned tree care business based in Checotah, Oklahoma. We’ve worked trees across Eastern Oklahoma for decades of combined experience – from single removals in town to multi-acre cedar clearing on ranches outside McAlester. The team knows the local trees, the local soils, the local weather, and the local rules.

Our approach is straightforward: we tell you what your trees actually need, even when it’s less work than you expected. If pruning will fix the problem, we say so. If a tree can’t be saved, we say that too. We don’t push removals on trees that don’t need to come down, and we don’t recommend saving trees that genuinely need to go. Most of our business comes from referrals, and that’s because we work this way on every job.

Why Eastern Oklahoma Property Owners Hire Us

Honest Assessments

This is the single biggest reason customers keep calling us back and recommending us to neighbours and family. We tell you what your trees actually need, even when it's less work than you expected. If a tree can be saved with a careful pruning instead of a full removal, that's what we recommend. The fast-sales-pitch approach where every tree somehow needs to come down is not how we operate - and that honesty is what's built the business over the years.

Specialized Equipment for the Toughest Jobs

Crane-assisted removal capability for hazardous trees and trees over structures. Full rigging systems for tight-space sectional dismantling. Chippers, dump trucks, stump grinders, brush mowers, and the heavy equipment for ranch-scale land clearing and cedar control. The right gear for the job, owned and maintained by us so it's ready when the call comes in.

Flat-Rate, No-Surprise Pricing

The quote we give you at the consultation is the price you pay at the end of the job. If we run into something unexpected once work starts - heavier wood than anticipated, hidden access complications, unforeseen conditions - that's our problem to solve, not a reason to raise your bill. You can budget confidently from the moment you sign the estimate.

Workmanship Guarantee

Every project comes with our workmanship guarantee. If something isn't right after we're done, we come back and make it right. That's the standard we've held to since day one, and it's why so much of our work comes through repeat customers and word-of-mouth referrals across Eastern Oklahoma.

Fully Insured Crews

General liability and workers' compensation coverage on every crew, with current certificates of insurance available directly from the carrier on request. The workers' comp side matters more than most homeowners realize - if an uninsured worker is hurt on your property, you can be held liable for the injury. We carry the coverage so that risk doesn't land on you.

Storm Damage and Insurance Billing

After major Eastern Oklahoma weather events - straight-line wind storms, ice storms, hail, tornadic activity - our crews respond quickly and document the damage in the way insurance adjusters need to see it. Written assessments, itemized estimates, photo records, and direct coordination with the carrier when applicable.

Complete Cleanup on Every Job

Brush chipped, larger wood hauled off or stacked for firewood if you want it, work area raked and tidied, debris blown off driveways and walkways. We leave the property cleaner than we found it. You shouldn't be picking up wood chips for the next month after the crew leaves.

We Don't Get Paid Until You're 100% Happy

We never ask for a dime until you're 100% happy with the work. The crew walks the property with you after the job, you point out anything that needs more attention, and we don't collect payment until you're satisfied. Simple as that.

Insurance Coverage You Can Verify

Tree work is one of the higher-risk job categories in any trade, and uninsured operators create real liability problems for the homeowners who hire them. If an uninsured worker is injured on your property, you can be held responsible for the medical costs and lost wages - even when the worker assured you they were insured. Checotah Tree Service carries the full slate of coverage required for professional tree work, and we'll provide a current certificate of insurance directly from the carrier on request before any job starts.

General Liability Insurance

Protects your property in the unlikely event of accidental damage during the work.

Workers' Compensation Coverage

Covers our crew members for any on-site injury, which protects you from being liable for a worker hurt on your property. This is the coverage most uninsured operators skip - and the one that can leave a homeowner exposed to a serious claim if something goes wrong.

Commercial Vehicle and Equipment Coverage

Trucks, chippers, stump grinders, cranes when needed, and all field equipment carry proper commercial insurance.

Insurance Claim Support

After storm damage or other tree-related insurance claims, we provide written assessments, itemized estimates, and photo documentation that adjusters can work with. We've worked with most of the major Oklahoma insurers and know what they need to see for clean claim resolution.

How We Protect Your Property During Tree Service

Tree work involves heavy equipment, falling wood, and a lot of movement through your yard. Protecting the property during the job isn't an afterthought - it's how we plan every project from the first walkthrough. Before any saw runs, we identify everything that needs protecting, from irrigation lines and landscape lighting to fences, hardscape, garden beds, septic systems, and outbuildings. Heavy equipment routes get planned to avoid sensitive areas. Mats and plywood go down on soft ground and driveways where trucks have to roll. We rig limbs so they come down where we want them, not where gravity decides to drop them.

When the cutting stops, the cleanup begins in earnest. Brush gets chipped, larger wood is hauled off or stacked for the homeowner if you want it for firewood, the work area gets raked and tidied, and we blow debris off driveways and walkways before we leave. The standard is simple - you should walk outside afterward and notice the tree is gone or pruned, but not see any other evidence we were there.

Trees Common to Eastern Oklahoma

Eastern Oklahoma sits at the western edge of the Ozark and Ouachita ecoregions and supports a remarkably diverse mix of native trees - far more variety than central or western Oklahoma. If you're identifying trees on your property, replanting after a removal, or planning new landscaping, these are species we work with most often across the region:

Most rural properties don't require permits for tree removal on private land. We'll flag any permit requirements during your free consultation.

Often, yes. Trees with less than 25% canopy loss, intact trunks, and stable root systems usually recover with proper pruning, cabling, or monitoring. Eastern Oklahoma Climate and Tree Risk Factors

Eastern Oklahoma's climate creates specific challenges for the trees that grow here. Hot, humid summers. Severe spring and early-summer thunderstorms with straight-line winds, tornadoes, and large hail. Periodic ice storms in winter that load branches with hundreds of pounds of glaze. Multi-year drought cycles. Active pest and disease pressure year-round. Understanding what trees face in this region helps explain why preventive maintenance matters here more than in milder climates.

Key Tree Risk Factors in Eastern Oklahoma

Climate / Hazard Factor Impact on Trees
Severe Thunderstorms & Straight-Line Winds Eastern Oklahoma sits inside Tornado Alley. Spring and early summer bring supercells, damaging straight-line winds (sometimes 80+ mph), large hail, and occasional tornadic activity - the leading cause of catastrophic tree failure in this region.
Ice Storms Winter ice events load branches with hundreds of pounds of glaze ice within hours. Eastern Oklahoma's 2007 and 2020 ice storms knocked down tens of thousands of trees across the region, and ice loading remains a major annual risk.
Tornadoes Direct tornado strikes are rare on any individual property, but the broader tornadic outflow and rear-flank downdraft winds that surround a tornado track damage far more trees than the funnel itself.
Drought Stress Multi-year dry periods, including the recurring flash drought conditions Oklahoma sees, stress trees year after year and open the door to pest infestations and fungal diseases that healthy trees would resist.
Oak Wilt An aggressive fungal disease affecting native oaks across Oklahoma, transmitted by sap-feeding beetles and through root grafts. Pruning oaks during the high-risk April–July window dramatically increases transmission risk.
Eastern Redcedar Encroachment Native eastern redcedar has spread aggressively across Oklahoma rangeland, pastures, and unmanaged acreage over the past several decades - a major land management and wildfire-fuel issue throughout Eastern Oklahoma.
Emerald Ash Borer The invasive beetle that has killed millions of ash trees nationally has been confirmed in Oklahoma. Dead and dying ash should be removed before they fail.
Bagworms & Tree Pests Bagworms cause major damage to evergreens across Eastern Oklahoma, and pine bark beetles, scale insects, and other pests are active year-round.

Most of the catastrophic tree failures we respond to across Eastern Oklahoma could have been prevented with maintenance done before the event. Pre-storm inspections, deadwood removal, weight reduction on overextended limbs, cabling for valuable trees with structural defects, and removal of trees that are too compromised to save are the cheapest insurance you can buy in this climate.
