These are the situations where a professional arborist consultation is the right call. Checotah Tree Service provides free on-site arborist consultations across Eastern Oklahoma – Checotah, Muskogee, Tahlequah, McAlester, Eufaula, and the surrounding communities – with honest recommendations, written reports when you need them, and zero pressure to schedule work afterward. Call (918) 992-4344 to schedule.
A consultation is a professional, on-site assessment of the trees, shrubs, stumps, and property conditions you’re concerned about. We come out, walk the property with you, look at whatever you want looked at, and give you a clear, honest read on what’s going on and what your options are. Depending on what you need, the visit can result in a verbal walkthrough and recommendations, a written estimate for any work that’s needed, or a formal written report suitable for insurance, real estate, or legal use.
Every consultation is free, and there’s no obligation to schedule any work afterward. The goal is to give you the information you need to make a good decision about your property – even when that decision is “leave it alone for now.”
Most property owners know something looks off with a tree but aren’t sure whether it needs trimming, removal, treatment, or just time. A consultation cuts through that guesswork. Common situations where customers call us in for a professional look:
If you’re not sure whether your situation warrants a consultation, call and describe it. We’ll usually be able to tell you over the phone whether an on-site visit will help.
Every consultation follows the same general process so you know what to expect.
We arrive at the property at the scheduled time, meet you outside, and walk to the trees or areas you’re concerned about. The walk-and-talk is the most important part – you tell us what you’ve noticed, when you noticed it, and what you’re worried about, and we look at the trees while you talk. Small details matter, so don’t hold back.
For each tree of concern, we evaluate the visible factors that tell us about the tree’s condition and structural integrity – canopy health, deadwood, lean, trunk condition, root flare and soil signs at the base, branch attachment quality, and any visible pest or disease indicators. For Eastern Oklahoma specifically, we also flag things like oak wilt risk factors, emerald ash borer signs on ash trees, cedar encroachment patterns, and the storm-damage warning signs we see across the region year after year.
Once the walkthrough is done, we walk through what we found and what your options are. If a tree needs to come down, we say so and explain why. If a tree can be saved with corrective pruning, cabling, or treatment, we say that too. If a tree is fine and just needs to be monitored, we tell you that and give you the warning signs to watch for. Honest recommendations are the whole point of the consultation – we don’t push removals on trees that can be saved, and we don’t recommend saving trees that genuinely need to come down.
If any work is recommended, you receive a clear written estimate covering scope, timeline, and total price, locked in by our No-Surprise Guarantee. You can book the work on the spot if you want, take some time to think about it, or pass on it entirely. There’s no pressure either way.
Eastern Oklahoma weather generates a lot of tree damage every year – spring thunderstorms with straight-line winds, the occasional tornadic event, ice storms in winter, and the recurring hail events that come with the territory. When trees take damage, the question of what to do with them often runs straight into an insurance claim.
That’s where formal storm-damage consultations come in. We document the damage with photos and written assessment, identify which trees can recover with restoration work and which need to come down, provide itemized estimates for the removal and repair work, and coordinate directly with your insurance adjuster when applicable. We’ve worked with most of the major Oklahoma carriers and know what documentation adjusters need to see for clean claim resolution. The whole thing tends to run more smoothly when the documentation is done right from the start.
Buying a property with significant mature trees is one of the situations where a pre-purchase consultation pays for itself many times over. Large hazardous trees, declining specimens, oak wilt-affected oaks, dead ash trees that need to come down – all of these can represent serious future costs that don’t show up on a standard home inspection. We walk the property, identify any trees that pose immediate or near-term hazards, evaluate the overall tree health, and give you a written report you can use in the negotiation or for your own planning purposes.
On the sale side, the same kind of inspection can identify issues you’ll want to address before the property hits the market – or document the condition of the trees so there’s no ambiguity in the transaction.
Eastern Oklahoma’s mix of climate, soils, and species generates a particular set of tree health issues we see over and over:
Catching these issues early often makes the difference between a tree that can be saved and one that has to come down. By the time decline is obvious from the road, the options have usually narrowed.
If the property has significant mature trees, especially close to structures, the answer is almost always yes. Tree-related costs after closing can run into thousands of dollars – sometimes tens of thousands for hazardous removals near houses, especially when the trees turn out to be in worse shape than they looked on a quick walkthrough during the showing. A pre-purchase consultation typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, gives you a clear written record of what you’re getting, and either confirms the property is in good shape or gives you ammunition for negotiation.
Same logic for ranch land, lake property, and acreage where cedar encroachment or other land-management issues might affect future development plans or fire-risk.
Often, yes. As a general rule, trees with less than 25% canopy loss, intact trunks, and stable root systems usually recover with proper pruning, monitoring, or in some cases cabling and bracing for structural support. Trees with split trunks, lifted root plates, extensive decay at the base, or major leader loss generally cannot be safely saved and should be removed.
There’s a lot of judgment involved in the middle ground, which is exactly what a consultation is for. We’ve seen plenty of trees the homeowner was sure had to come down that turned out to be perfectly recoverable with the right pruning, and we’ve also seen trees the homeowner thought were fine that were actually weeks away from failing. The free consultation gives you the honest read.
Most consultations take 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the property and the number of trees being evaluated. A single-tree assessment is usually closer to 20 minutes. A full property walkthrough with multiple trees of concern is closer to 45 minutes. Large acreage assessments – cedar encroachment evaluations, ranch property reviews, large land-clearing projects – can take an hour or more, but the time is built into the free consultation. We don’t charge by the hour for any of it.
Phone and virtual consultations are also available at no cost, which is useful for straightforward questions or for properties where a same-day site visit isn’t practical.
